Sean O’Connor, an accomplished IT executive, has been named associate vice president and chief technology officer in the Office of the Vice President and CIO for Northeastern University. O’Connor will report to the Vice President for Information Technology and CIO, effective August 12, 2019.
As CTO at Northeastern, O’Connor will join the ITS Senior Leadership Team and play a key role in developing and delivering innovative and effective technical infrastructures across the enterprise. He and I will work alongside one another to create the strategic long-term plans for a Cloud Center of Excellence and for unified communications, both of which will help transform Northeastern into a more modern, digital university and enhance teaching, learning, research, and administration.

With Northeastern becoming increasingly global, and with networks and locations across North America and internationally, O’Connor will work to understand the distinct needs of the community and to help deliver a seamless experience for everyone, regardless of time and place. The new CTO will lead the systems and production services, and network communications services teams in these and other efforts to upgrade and enhance Northeastern’s systems, servers, and networks.
O’Connor has an extensive record of over 20 years in successful systems governance and network operations. Currently, he is CTO and assistant CIO at Worcester Polytechnic Institute where he has conducted an award-winning build out of infrastructure and regularly works with campus partners in the strategic planning and budgeting of IT projects. O’Connor oversees WPI network operations and architecture, information security operations, telecommunications, campus access systems, surveillance, server rooms, and WPI’s disaster recovery site.
